We went on a
quick camping trip over the Christmas break –
just a couple of weeks, which is a pretty short
trip for us. Mom and Dad like to go out to West
Texas every Christmas, they decorate the trailer
and our campsite with lights (see episode 22)
and we have a lot of fun. We’re getting to be
very experienced travelers now. When we stop for
lunch on driving days, usually in a highway rest
area, we all come out and check out the view. If
there’s a good sunbeam, then everyone rushes to
lay in the best spots and soak it up.
Cairo is still a little skittish, especially if
he hears a sound outside or people talking. He
goes and hides in the closet in the back corner
of the bedroom when something scares him, and
that’s where he rides when we’re driving. Mom
started calling the closet “Egypt”, now when she
looks around the trailer and doesn’t see him
anywhere she says “Well, I guess Cairo is in
Egypt”.
Tiger Lily and I never get scared, though. As
soon as the trailer stops, whether it’s arriving
at a new campground or just at a gas station, we
run to look out the back windows, and Mom
usually leaves a curtain or two up for us. When
we were coming back from Big Bend we had to stop
at the Border Patrol checkpoint. I think as soon
as the agents looked in the trailer windows and
saw us, they just waved Mom and Dad right on
through. And they had a nice dog who didn’t even
bark at us.
Mom and Dad always put on Santa hats and go
hiking up a big mountain on Christmas day. They
pick some fresh mistletoe and bring it home, and
hang a piece up in the trailer. But they always
put it someplace where we can’t reach it,
because they say it would make us sick if we
nibbled on it. We’d never do that, though…..at
least not when they were looking!
