When Billy first came to the sanctuary he was
VERY feral…..he would stay hidden whenever
people were around and we’d almost never see him
– we referred to him as one of the “ghost cats
of the Outback”. Over time, though, he’s grown
used to seeing volunteers come around every
afternoon and give some TLC to the cats who are
more social. They also put out plates of wet
food, something that Billy has found he just
can’t resist.
Over the years Billy has ventured
out more and more – at first we’d see him
reclining on a shelf way up high, but clearly
visible to us. Then he began to walk around the
ramps and platforms while people were in the
Outback, and now will sometimes even be seen
strolling across the floor – never getting very
close to us, but for him this is major progress.
And, of course, when there are plates of wet
food being passed out, we always put some out on
the edges and corners for the shy guys like
Billy.
In 2010 Billy got a badly infected ear –
luckily it was able to be treated, but now he
has a permanently floppy look on that side. He
feels just fine, though, and that ear certainly
makes him easy to recognize. And once in a
while, he'll even allow us to get in a pet or
two....and as you can see below, he's discovered
that being petted feels pretty wonderful.
So we'll keep giving him as much TLC as he
wants, and who knows...someday he may even
decide to come over and try out a lap!
