Somehow Sheila
Smith just happened to be outside that
particular bookstore in Waco at that particular
moment. Something alerted her to the presence of
a rail-thin young cat, barely more than a kitten
herself, who had just given birth to a litter of
five. It was obvious in her malnourished
condition that she, and the kittens, would not
survive for long.
But Sheila never travels without traps and
carriers, and by nightfall, mama and all her
kittens were safe and sound in Austin.
With proper
medical care through Shadow Cats, all of them
grew healthy and strong. When the kittens
were old enough to be spayed and neutered, they
were all successfully placed in permanent
adoptive homes. Because of her feral nature,
mama remained at the sanctuary. She was a breath
of air moving so softly and quietly that no one
heard or saw her – but Sheila’s
sixth sense found her…and so, her name is
Whispers.
We thought
Whispers would be an untouchable feral cat
living out her life in the far reaches of the
Outback. But when an illness required her to be
confined indoors for a lengthy course of medication,
she showed an interest in exploring the Uptown
porch, so we let her stay there when she regained
her health. Whispers has become more
comfortable being around people, really
comfortable curling up with some of the other
cats...and who knows, maybe one day we'll reach
out to her and get a purr instead of a snarl
;o)
