When you look into the eyes of a frightened animal at a shelter, countless possibilities unfold, entire lives and tragic backstories you can almost imagine. Maybe they had someone who loved them and passed away, maybe they were victims of abuse, hoarding, or medical neglect. Or maybe, they were left in a hotel room on a road trip and weren’t lucky enough to find their way back home.
That was Edith’s story.
Edith had been with her owner since she was a kitten. For nearly 13 years of life, she’d known the love and care of one family.
When it was time to move across the country one fateful night, the weary travelers stopped to stay the night at a hotel. Unfortunately, when it came time to pack up the next day, Edith was nowhere to be found. Thinking that she somehow got out, they left for the road.
It turned out that Edith was hiding in the box spring, scared in this foreign place without the comforts she was so used to, and the housekeepers heard meowing when they entered to clean the room. With the assistance of the police, Edith was taken out of the box spring.
But in her fear, she lashed out at the officer and landed herself in mandatory quarantine. This speaks nothing of Edith’s nature, only the level of fear she was experiencing.
She was taken to Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter. The shelter made every effort to reconnect her with her family. It was a painful decision for the owner, but they ultimately had to surrender Edith when they couldn’t get back to her. The shelter immediately began working to find Edith a new home, as the threat of euthanasia loomed over her head after her quarantine.
When they reached out to Shadow Cats, we stepped in as soon as we could. They transported her to us, and she has been nothing short of incredible in her time here. It was suspected that she had diabetes, but this lucky girl appears to be in remission for the time being, though we are closely monitoring her numbers. Now, this sweet senior can live out the rest of her days in the comfort of Shadow Cats Rescue.
And boy, is she sweet! Despite her harrowing story, Edith is incredibly gentle. Though she hid initially, all you have to do is walk into the room and she’s bounding toward you, excitedly walking to her food bowl to eat while she has the company. We can’t wait to watch her blossom, and we’re so grateful to be a part of her story.
