Sprite

In Memory of Sprite    06/18/2016 – 03/17/2017

Sprite came to us from the Austin Animal Center where she tested positive for leukemia. While she did not get to stay with us very long, the time she had here at Shadow Cats was filled with love. She had a safe and warm sanctuary home where she could climb to the tallest shelf to overlook the creek, lots of food, and plenty of play time. She did all the things young kittens get to do – run, play and have lots of kitten buddies. She was one of the lucky ones. We are never guaranteed a long life and precious Sprite certainly never had that, but what she did have was a life filled with joy until the end.

Statistically, in our experience over half of kittens born with leukemia won’t live to their first birthday. But for the time they do have with us, our  kitty nannies and volunteers work hard to give them the best we can possibly give. Their sponsors allow us to give them the very best life possible and they love them from afar.

Sprite developed acute issues related to leukemia and started to have respiratory problems this morning.  She passed gently surrounded by loving hands and hearts. Rest in peace, little Sprite. You were something else.

Tuxie

Tuxie

In Memory of Tuxie    10/25/03 – 02/16/17

In the Spring of 2004, a striking young tuxedo cat stood watch over his colony. Tall and strong, he reigned supreme as the Top Tux. It just so happened that is when Shadow Cats discovered this un-managed colony of 100+ cats at a local church and put his dreams of unregulated breeding to rest.

Tuxie was trapped and, due to unexpected issues, came to Shadow Cats. He lived his life in the Outback and Downtown areas. His BFF was Pretty Boy and in later years he was often found curled up with another bestie, most often Poptart. He loved his chicken treats. He would delicately take home-cooked chicken from the hands of our volunteers and always stayed close by ‘just in case’ there was a second helping offered. Even though he was suffering from renal disease, he always managed to show up during treat time.

Tuxie passed gently just a bit ago with loving hearts in attendance. His crossing marks the beginning of the end of an era – those cats trapped from so many years ago in Shadow Cats infancy. He lived large, he lived well and his time with us will always be remembered. Rest easy sweet boy, you left your mark on all our hearts.

Nikki

Nikki

In Memory of Nikki    09/30/04 – 02/12/17

Nikki had the thickest, most lustrous coat of any of our long-haired cats at the sanctuary. She was at the top of our brushing list to keep her fur from getting matted, and in the summer we sometimes gave her a cool “lion cut”. The first year Nikki got clipped she was prancing around like a runway model when she came home with her new style, but as she’s grew to tolerate being brushed more we were able to keep her groomed ourselves.

Nikki came to the Sanctuary as a skittish and difficult to approach teenager. She spent several years with a special foster and the last ten years of her life here at Shadow Cats.   When she left us this morning she left as a sweet, headbutts, in your face, lap cat.  The power of love and TLC overcame even the most frightened and difficult of hearts.

Nikki had battled renal disease for the last two years and until even yesterday was seeking love and laps. This morning however, it was clear her battle was over. She collapsed suddenly and there was nothing more we could do for her. She passed surrounded by loving hands and hearts.

Oliver

Oliver

In Memory of Oliver    04/08/16 – 01/18/17

Oliver came to us via the Austin Animal Center. Very sick, he spent two weeks in intensive care at the hospital but miraculously he bounced back and came to join the cats in Cookie’s Place soon after. We celebrated when he passed the five pound mark and cried when he could not sustain it and started the ultimate decline from the ravages of feline leukemia. Danielle, one of Shadow Cats kitty nannies, took him home on his last night and loved and cuddled and comforted him. He wasn’t alone. This morning, surrounded by loving hands, we helped him gently cross over.

We wish Oliver had been with us longer, but we are so happy he had the time he did, that he lived in the moment. Oliver climbed and played hard with his buddies. He smelled the fresh air, sunned himself on the ramps and felt the kisses and chin scritches of so many people who loved him. We are very grateful to his sponsors and donors who helped cover his medical care and who loved him from afar, to all our volunteers and friends, and especially to our amazing kitty nannies with hearts so big they take their work home with them and whisper words of comfort at 3am. Priceless. Thank you for giving him so much love. Rest easy, little buddy.

Otis

Otis

In Memory of Otis    07/10/10 – 01/17/17

If you were to first meet Otis, you would think he was a stern old man cat.  However, if you spent any time with him at all, you would know that behind those serious eyes and penetrating gaze rested a character ready to be your best friend. He had his days when he enjoyed the younger kittens, but for the most part, he enjoyed the volunteers and nannies telling him he was handsome and scratching him under the chin and his ears. He reigned supreme in Cookie’s Place.

Otis was rescued off the streets in San Antonio by Kara and Rita Short, until they found safe haven for him at Shadow Cats. He lived a wonderful life here for several years.

Over the last several days, Otis became anemic and despite treatment and care, today he began to have respiratory difficulty. The difficult decision was made to help him cross over. Otis was surrounded by loving hearts and caring hands as he made his transition.

Thank you to all that loved and cared for Otis – his initial rescuers, his sponsors, friends and donors, and all the volunteers and kitty nannies who adored him. You all made his life at Shadow Cats the best it could be. Rest in peace, Otis – you were some Top Cat!

Sandy

In Memory of Sandy    09/01/16 – 01/10/17

Sometimes you have to really look hard to see the positive in a situation and today is one of those days. Our precious little Sandy, only four months old, has passed from the ravages of feline leukemia.  Just a tiny one, we’d hoped she would have many years to enjoy her life at Shadow Cats but it was not to be.

Sweet Sandy was found at night on the side of the road in the rain. Poor little one was quite ill and her rescuers saved her from that hard ending. She soon came to Shadow Cats where she thrived. Although her time was too short, she was dry, warm and loved every minute of the day. She had friends and playtime and plenty of kibble. Her life was full.

Too soon the symptoms of leukemia preyed upon her but we try to remember that she did not pass alone on a nameless road. She was held, loved and cherished and that is what we hope she took with her – all the love we could possibly give her.

Her life was made better by all the volunteers at Shadow Cats, her loving sponsors and all of our friends here. Thank you for caring about this angel of a kitten. Rest in peace little Sandy.

Noelle

Noelle

In Memory of Noelle    05/15/03 – 12/29/16

On a cold winters night many years ago and around this time of year, a little black declawed cat was eeking out a living on Austin streets. Tiny but mighty, she did her best. Lucky for her, she was rescued and brought home, where she promptly bit the rescuer’s dad! Another stroke of luck – the rescuer belonged to an entire family of animal advocates and they worked diligently to find the right home for her.

Since she was rescued during the holidays, her name became Noelle.  She settled in at Shadow Cats and gained all the respect of the other cats and her humans. Only seven pounds at her peak, she knew exactly how to reign supreme. Often, declawed cats will resort to biting behaviors if their first line of defense is taken away, and she honed that skill mightily. We all respected those teeth!

Over the years and with constant reinforcement, Noelle seemed to mellow out. She enjoyed small amounts of petting, stroking and even allowed lap time for her favorite people. Noelle lived a full and happy life here at Shadow Cats for well over a decade. She lived her best life and it was a good one. We take our hats off to this fine little lady who ruled us all.

Noelle passed gently surrounded by loving hands. At the end, all she wanted were soothing reassurances and comforting whispers. She knew the love of those that cared for her daily needs, the volunteers, her sponsors and her extended family here.  Thank you for giving this little wisp of a girl so very much- she was one of the lucky ones.

Love comes in many ways and for us it came in the form of a petite little black cat that came to us just a few short months ago. Who knew she would steal our hearts so completely. For several months she lived in Cookie’s Place surrounded by lots of playmates and human friends. ZeeZee especially loved to groom her and took her under her wing. She spent her days overlooking the creek and the abundant wildlife, safe on her high platform in Cookie’s. Loved by all, she found plenty of laps to warm.

All too soon the obvious symptoms of her leukemia became apparent. We brought her inside to monitor her more closely and she lived an extra month as Venus’ companion kitty in the house. She accepted her medications from the kitty nannies without issue and she always got extra scritches from them. Volunteers visited her daily and she was loved by all. Today however, she told us it was the day she was ready to take leave. Her breathing is more labored and her will to be here is gone. She crossed over gently and in the loving arms of all of us here at Shadow Cats.

Not a gentler little soul will pass through here for a while. Thank you to her loving sponsors, volunteers and kitty nannies who cared for her every day. You made her life here better and you helped her live her best life. Fly high angel – you are but a breath away.

Andy

Andy

In Memory of Andy    01/27/10 – 12/06/16

andy_5136 Sometimes a cat looks at you and you feel an immediate connection that can’t be explained. It’s as if it always was. As though you were always a part of each other. That’s the way it was with Andy. As though he was somehow, someway, always a part of Shadow Cats. When a cat with that strong of a connection decides he has to leave us, it leaves an eternal mark on our hearts.  We are all forever changed for having known this little black and white cat.

We don’t know his whole story; how he came to be in such dire condition and living on the streets. We do know Andy came to the Austin Animal Shelter in rough shape and, when he was examined, he was found to be positive for both feline leukemia and FIV.  He was a loving and sweet boy who stole the hearts of all the staff who met him, so AAC placed him into a foster home until we could take him. While he was with his AAC foster mom, he gained almost a pound. Once at Shadow Cats, he received a full medical workup and he was found to have severe heart issues in addition to his other issues.

andy4lgAndy lived a full life at Shadow Cats. He forgot what it felt like to be hungry or cold or alone. He knew only a full belly and a soft bed and many friends. He especially enjoyed the kittens and spent many hours in the last few days grooming our newest Shadow Cat, Sandy. He found cozy spots to curl up for a nap, and an outdoor porch with sunbeams and lots of perches overlooking the creek. Life was good and that is what he remembered, that is what he took with him.

Thank you to Andy’s sponsors and all who cared about him, including his first foster mama. Thank you to our volunteers and kitty nannies who give never ending love and care.

Andy passed today surrounded by loving hands and hearts.  He leaves behind many who loved him dearly. We know that we often do have a lot of time with our special needs population so we make the most out of every single minute, every single day. No regrets, only love.  Rest easy, sweet Andy.

Linden

Linden

In Memory of Linden    05/06/16 – 12/05/16

Today is doubly sad. We lost Tabitha earlier today and now our precious Linden, only seven months old, has left us. An insidious tumor, likely lymphoma, made it increasingly difficult for him to breathe today and we had to make the difficult decision to let him go.

We know that kittens born with feline leukemia often don’t make it to their first birthday but that realization never makes it any easier. Our greatest solace is knowing he had a heck of time here at Shadow Cats and up until yesterday he was playing to his hearts’ content. He was well known in Cookie’s as a rowdy boy, one who liked to chase the other kitties up the condo, hold down his buddies and squeal in delight. He cuddled with any lucky volunteer who gave him their lap and he always had a sweet purr and head thump for the kitty nannies who cared for him each day. So while his life was way too short, he filled each and every kitten day with exuberance and delight at the world around him.

Linden came to us just a few short months ago from the Austin Animal Center. He was loved and cherished every moment of his life. He passed in the loving arms of his kitty nannies. Linden knew nothing but love from the moment he came to Shadow Cats from our volunteers, his sponsors and kitty nannies. He lived a joyous and beautiful life and he left his paw prints all over our hearts. We like to think he is with Tabitha right now, both strong and healed, and waiting for us all. Rest easy, babies.
