In Memory of Nettie 04/09/2017 – 09/08/2026
Nettie came to us at 9 years old and only 4lbs. She had lived most of the last 4 years of her life in a small city shelter in Indiana, fighting and trying her best every day. Initially abandoned from a car, a Good Samaritan saved her and brought her to the shelter, where she ended up being adopted. Unfortunately, circumstances with her adopter changed, and she was surrendered back to the shelter a year later.
We’re not sure when she was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia, or when she started showing GI symptoms, but this little shelter never gave up on her. After 2 years, a friend of this shelter and Shadow Cats reached out to us, looking for a permanent home for this sweet girl and a way out of shelter living. She flew Nettie to Texas and supported her care after arriving here.
Nettie was so sweet and tiny; it was hard to believe this little girl was a senior! She made biscuits, loved playing with toys, and wanted to be on your lap. We worked hard to get a plan together for her GI symptoms. We worked closely with our veterinarians and eventually found some things that helped after diagnostics and medication trials. She finally gained some weight, her fur started to grow back, and she had more energy. Nettie was happy, and her favorite time of the day was feeding time. She would get so excited when she heard a bag of food being opened; she would immediately jump up to try and steal as much as she could.
Nettie went through many ups and downs, fighting Feline Leukemia, severe GI issues, ringworm, and mobility issues during the time she was here. She showed her resilience time and time again and seemed to always bounce back after taking a bad turn.
Unfortunately, she did not bounce back this time, showing us that she was finally ready. She had spent months sunbathing, with many treats and all the attention she could ask for. Even if we feel she wasn’t with us long enough, she had a great last few months, and we think she felt that made up for the previous few years being stuck in a cage.
