In Memory of Pikachu 5/10/2017 – 9/3/2026
Pikachu came to Shadow Cats from New Hope Animal Rescue after his health started to decline. After initially testing negative for Feline Leukemia, he was brought into New Hope’s adoption program. But as is the case with Feline Leukemia, he was doing well until the day he wasn’t. As it turned out, Pikachu was not only positive for FeLV, but also FIV, and likely had cancer. With a poor prognosis from their trusted veterinarian, Pikachu needed a safe place to spend the rest of his days, and that place ended up being Shadow Cats.
With the state he was in upon arriving at the Sanctuary, we were surprised to find that his pain never slowed him down. His food was always gone within minutes of setting it out, and he made sure to seek out pets from anyone walking in the room, or seek out new toys to play with. Beyond people, he came to be friends with our Bebe, who can be somewhat particular about who she spends time with. Above everything else, however, his favorite thing to do was spend time on the catio, feeling the warmth of the sun and observing the world outside.
It was not too long until we saw the pain rear its ugly head. His energy began to wane, and we knew the tough call would have to be made. There was so much more for him to discover, and so much more love to give him, but we’re happy he got to experience a month with as much warmth and love as he could bear before his trip across the Rainbow Bridge.

It can be hard, loving something so much, yet knowing it will soon be gone. Pikachu’s strength and resilience remind us that this love persists, even when they are memories.
