In Memory of Whiskers 8/21/2019 – 7/26/2026
Whiskers came to us from Longview, Tx after initially seeking refuge in a car engine during the big freeze in February 2021. He had wedged himself in tightly to get warmth, not expecting it to be restarted so quickly. Unable to get out quickly enough, he suffered from burns over his chest and neck as he worked to get himself free. He was taken to a local rescue, where he started treatment and also found himself testing positive for Feline Leukemia. The call went out to transfer him to a rescue that could assist, and we answered!
His burns eventually healed, and we quickly learned how much of a lovebug this guy was, but unfortunately he did not take well to living with roommates. Thankfully, a wonderful volunteer fell in love with him and opened their home to this boy. What started as just a couple of weeks’ trial turned into 4 years! After settling into his new home, his personality really started to shine, knowing he was finally home.
Whiskers came into his family’s life when their hearts were still healing from the loss of their previous cat and somehow, with his sweet spirit and endless affection, helped make them feel whole again. A cat with the soul of a dog, he greeted every visitor at the front door, eager to collect as many pets as possible, and thoroughly enjoyed belly rubs and kisses. While he had little patience for other cats, he adored dogs and formed a special bond with his dog sister, Willow.
He knew exactly what he wanted and wasn’t shy about getting it! After morning snuggles with his mom, he would gently push her out of the way with his paw on her back so he could take over his coveted spot on his favorite chair. While his parents cooked dinner, he made it his mission to supervise from the center of the kitchen floor, just in case there were to be snacks for him – you never know when it’s chicken or salmon time!
He had a refined music taste, taking to the harp especially, and loved to just sit and listen. Always enjoying warm spots, he loved lying on the dishwasher door fresh from unloading. Whiskers also took his daily medicine without complaint, seeming to understand that it helped him.
His dad was his favorite companion, the two of them spending hours curled up together on the couch and sharing naps under his favorite blanket. Truth be told, he had his dad completely wrapped around his paw, and both of them were perfectly happy with that.
Unfortunately, after 4 years with his family, his health started to take a turn. He was a champ through it all, and at first you couldn’t even tell something was wrong. He remained his gentle, loving, and endlessly charming self right up until the very end. Whiskers was loved by so many, especially by his parents, who gave him the home he so much deserved.
