Frankie

Frankie

In Memory of Frankie       5/14/2020 – 4/26/2022

Frankie was rescued from the streets of Irvine, CA, along with her three siblings. There seemed to be no positive outcome once she and her siblings all tested positive for leukemia, however, a local rescue and a volunteer reached out to help them. They contacted Shadow Cats to see if we might have room for all four and at the time we did! Transport was arranged and the California Four, as they have always been known, packed their bags and were on the way to their new home at Shadow Cats.

These four kitties were just the most fabulous group. We were all head over heels in love with them as soon as they came out of their carriers. All different personalities, all just so precious. In their initial isolation period, these four were so much fun. They played together, chased each other around, and then collapsed and slept in a big bundle on top of each other. Our hearts just melted. These four gave us such joy, they were all love bugs!

Frankie was the smallest of the siblings. She was always on the move, just a blur when playing. She was so beautiful like a tiny black jaguar, as smooth as velvet with the most gorgeous eyes. She was stunning! And friendly! Always there to greet you when you walked into the room. She wanted to be loved, she wanted to be held, she wanted to be with you. We were so happy to be able to fulfill her every wish.

Over the past few months Frankie has suffered from issues related to leukemia. She has had bouts of severe stomach problems and has bounced back. She was little but strong, but today her strength left her – the fight had gone. She fought so hard and through all her meds and treatments she was the best kitty, she was just such a happy girl. She was such a trooper through it all. The tears flowed from everyone at the sanctuary this morning as we said goodbye. Our sweet girl passed cradled in loving arms wrapped in a soft blanket, so gently and ever so peacefully.

Precious Frankie, you will be missed by all, especially our caring, dedicated staff who cared for you every day. Our tears will dry and we will all celebrate the time you spent with us at Shadow Cats. Just shy of 2 years old, you lived your best life at the sanctuary, loved so very much by so many.

Rest easy, sweetheart. Fly high, free of pain and suffering.

Thanks to her sponsors and all who cared for Frankie at the sanctuary, our volunteers, and doctors and staff at Sam Bass Wellness.

Boston

Boston

In Memory of Boston         2/5/2016 – 4/9/2022

Not sure of all that happened in his life, but it was a hard life we believe for certain. We know that this handsome boy ended up in a shelter in Fort Worth, TX, not very well at all, and then was found to be both FeLV and FIV positive. Not many options for a boy with this diagnosis. Caring people reached out to try and find this boy a home or a sanctuary to give him a chance. He deserved a chance to live. We had room at the time and Boston was on his way to a safe and loving place, Cookies Place here at Shadow Cats.

Boston arrived in February. He was a very sick boy, so we got him the care he needed and he improved a little every day. Our poor boy was so unsure – he was hissy and swatty, needing lots of TLC and we told him every day, ”You have come to the right place, Boston, we are gonna love you and care for you and you will never be scared again, we have lots of time and patience”. He did accept pets and scritches from our staff. They were wonderful with him, so caring. He was a quiet boy, keeping to himself, but we knew soone he would be one of the gang, just a matter of time.

Sadly, we didn’t have enough time. Our precious boy has struggled with many health issues. It seemed to be one after the other in the short time he was with us. After a sudden downturn today he was suffering, so a gentle passing was our gift to him. He was cradled in the arms of his caregivers, and passed knowing he was loved. We hope in the short weeks that Boston was with us he knew how much he was loved, and the scars of the past were lessened. Every day he had the best care, he had food, he was safe and he was cherished. Precious Boston, we so desperately wanted you to get well.

Rest easy, dear Boston. Your star has dimmed, but you will always live on in our hearts. Fly free, precious boy, romp and play, healed and well.

Thanks to all who helped rescue Boston and all who loved and cared for him. Special thanks to the Doctors and staff at Sam Bass Veterinary Wellness.

Ginny

Ginny

In Memory of Ginny         12/17/2006 – 3/10/2022

Ginny was found by a great friend with her two kittens during a TNR (trap, neuter, return) operation at a local colony. She did not look well, so was taken to our hospital where tests revealed a positive diagnosis for leukemia for her and her kittens. The ‘return’ part of TNR then became a less attractive option for a FeLV kitty so Ginny came to live at the sanctuary. Her kittens, Rocky and Wren, were adopted. All our kitties that have leukemia at the sanctuary mostly live together in Cookies Place, but there are some that do not do well in a group setting. Ginny recovered well but she was a very shy girl around most people, and a little hesitant around too many other kitties as well. When we first met her, we always thought of her as the shy timid girl who would run away from us. Well, our beautiful brown tabby girl was very shy but she was certainly not timid!

At the old sanctuary, Ginny was able to be herself. She lived in the house with just a few other roommates. It was quiet and suited her; she felt safe. We would see her, would play hide and seek with her, and even got to pet her when she felt in the mood for pets. This is when we knew she was certainly not timid. Precious Ginny could give you “that look”, that” I dare you” look, the look that could stop you in your tracks and make you back away. Pet me one more time and I’m going to swat you! And she did, many times!

When we moved to the new sanctuary, we knew that all our kitties were going to love it, and they do, but we knew Ginny would have a hard time settling in since she was such a shy girl. Doing what is best for all our cats always at Shadow Cats, Ginny stayed at the old sanctuary and was fostered by the Smiths. She continued to live a calmer and quieter life, with the best care and her every need taken care of. She was comfortable and she had her people in The Smiths.

Over the past months Ginny has been declining, diagnosed with lymphoma, and she began to get frail. Ginny has lived a long life for a kitty diagnosed with leukemia – 16 years old. She has lived at the sanctuary for most of her years and truly lived HER life. We loved her for who she was. She has been safe, had every comfort, and been cared for not only by all at Shadow Cats but by her person, Sheila. Ginny was a special girl. She was also so pretty, a light brown tabby with beautiful markings and, this was so cute, one of her front paws was a different color – just her toes! So cute, we would always say to her when we saw her, ’Hello Ginny with the cute toes’.

In the last couple of years, she did allow a few of us the sheer pleasure of crawling into our laps or snuggling beside us, and it was wonderful! It was so special to see Ginny expand her world and become a little more social. But, we were ever on the alert for “the look”. 😊

As a beautiful gesture and so very special, Ginny was adopted by her special person, Sheila, a few weeks ago. She snuggled every night with her, was pampered and had the best care. As with age and illness Ginny had become a bit picky of late with food, but she had grown very fond of the canned Vienna sausages; she always knew when that can was opened, and her little face would light up when they were offered, go figure!

Today was her day to bid us farewell. She told us she was ready. Ginny left this world knowing she was loved deeply by many, she passed gently and ever so peacefully cradled in the arms of her special person. This shy but spicy girl will be missed so very much. Rest easy, precious Ginny, be at peace. You were very much loved. We celebrate your life. Soar on your angel wings, pretty girl. Our feisty girl, you sure were very special.

Ginny is reunited with Madison. These two older ladies spent much time together and Madison has been waiting to welcome her across the Rainbow Bridge. The tears flow, but they will dry and smiles will return. The memories will always be in our hearts and knowing these two old gals are together again is a comfort to us all. They are telling stories, chatting away, they are strong and healed.

Special thank you to Emily J who rescued her and to all her sponsors, our staff and volunteers and especially to the Smiths for fostering and then adopting this precious girl.

”Once a Shadow Cat, always a Shadow Cat”

James

James

In Memory of James         1/19/2019 – 3/4/2022

James has been with us for just a couple of days. We were so in love with this handsome tuxie! James had us laughing from the minute he arrived! A confident, happy boy he was out of his carrier and in our laps within the first 5 minutes. We knew he was going to be a heartbreaker and a favorite of many.

James just came to us from Victoria, TX. The wonderful staff and volunteers from the Dorothy O’Connor Pet Adoption Center searched for other options for a positive outcome but with his FeLV+ status being seen as an obstacle by adopters, Shadow Cats was able to squeeze him in. He started his 10 day isolation period and we were so happy to have him with us. Such a gorgeous boy!

A medical emergency sent James to the hospital. After extensive testing was done an inoperable mass was found. The heartbreaking decision was made to let James pass gently and peacefully, held in loving arms, and be free of pain and further suffering.

James, we miss you already. Your time with us was only for a few days but you stole our hearts from the get go. You were loved very much! Rest easy, sweet boy, and fly high.

Thanks to all who loved and cared for James.

Mizo

Mizo

In Memory of Mizo         7/23/2020 – 3/4/2022

Mizo was at the Rockwall, TX, shelter where she was slowly fading away from leukemia and liver issues. This adult cat weighed just over four pounds. Despite the shelter’s attempts to help her she continued to fade. Thanks to caring people, she was transported to Shadow Cats about three weeks ago. Sweetest kitty, as soon as she was out of her carrier she was in our arms and we were smitten!

Mizo was given intensive care at our hospital. We hoped that she would respond and turn the corner. She came home from the hospital looking bright-eyed and wanting love, pets, and ready to play. She still required vigilant monitoring but we were hopeful she was on her way to living large here at the Sanctuary or even in a home. We had high hopes. Mizo struggled even on her first days at the sanctuary and had to return to the hospital for more care. After all avenues were exhausted, Mizo still was not responding well. For her to be free of suffering, a gentle passing, cradled in loving arms, was our final gift to this dear sweet girl.

Rest easy, precious Mizo. We did not know you well, but we loved you deeply.

Thanks to all who cared for Mizo – the shelter, our caring staff, and all the doctors and staff at Sam Bass Veterinary Wellness.

Chelsea

Chelsea

In Memory of Chelsea         3/15/2009 – 1/16/2022

Trapped as a feral kitten, Chelsea went into an adoption program, but she wasn’t nearly social enough to get adopted, so she spent a long time in the shelter, waiting for a miracle. Then someone took her home to foster her in the hope that she’d gain the social skills that would help her find that forever home. Alas, that didn’t happen – she had moments where she could be downright, well, cranky would be a nice way to put it.

We were contacted and Chelsea moved in to Shadow Cats. She’s certainly not the first “problem child” we’ve taken under our wing. She was a feisty one, but we had all the patience in the world to help her settle in and find out just what she needed to live a happy life on her own terms.

Being feisty was a kind way of describing our Chelsea – she often lashed out at other cats and us humans, too. They are many of us at Shadow Cats who have a Chelsea story to tell; we have been on the receiving end of growls, hisses, and swipes! We would not get too close to Chelsea. All she need do was give us ‘that look’ and we knew our attention was not welcome. Even though our girl was a snippy one we loved and cared for her every day. She always had a squishy bed, always given her favorite foods, the best seat on the catio, her favorite toy, and the best care, and was loved very much for who she was.

Chelsea has battled some medical issues over the years and being such a grumpy girl she was never the easiest to medicate. We knew she wasn’t feeling well and when she let us try to help her feel better and did not complain too much, a trip to the hospital was planned. Advanced renal disease was the diagnosis and over the past few weeks we have done all we can to keep Chelsea comfortable. There have been growls but Chelsea has allowed us to pet her, very sparingly, and she has allowed us to just love her up close a little.

Today Chelsea was tired. She looked at us with those big eyes and told us her fight had left her. Today, she let us love her, she let us cuddle her and after giving her scores of kisses, Chelsea passed peacefully surrounded by those that loved and cared for her all her days at the sanctuary. The room was filled with love, sweet music playing softly.

Rest easy, Chelsea. We will miss walking into the Harmony room and seeing you on the cat tree. We will miss your door dashing, we will miss seeing you on the shelves on the catio, and we will miss you for who you were. You made us smile every day with your ‘attitude’. You lived your life your way and we loved you so much for it!

Thanks to her sponsors, our staff. and volunteers for loving her.

Annie

Annie

In Memory of Annie         3/1/2009 – 1/13/2022

Annie came to the sanctuary in the fall of 2010. She was rescued from a hoarding situation and, being very skittish and not loving the company of people at all, was destined for a barn placement, but she got very sick and came to stay at the sanctuary to recover. Winter set in, and it seemed too harsh to release her into unfamiliar surroundings during the cold weather. By spring she was very settled into the sanctuary and seemed so shy and timid that we were concerned about her ability to get along on her own in a feral cat colony, so we decided to let her stay at the sanctuary. By then you know that we had all fallen in love with this fluffy girl.

Annie was so stunningly beautiful and she started to become a little bit more comfortable with people being around, but she was still very wary of anyone too close. Who knows what had happened to her to make her so fearful of humans. We would chat to her from afar and try to get her used to our presence. She would watch us intently from the highest perch. Over the months she began to recover from her ordeal and she blossomed into the most gorgeous girl. A safe environment filled with love had made all the difference. Still not wanting any contact with us, we always told her “when you are ready we will be ready, too.”

At Shadow Cats, she was able to live the life she deserves, on her own terms, and we cherished her, whether eventually in our lap or we’re just admiring her lustrous beauty from afar. And we’ve got lots of patience….but we always hoped that one day we’d get to find out if Annie is as soft as she looks.

We were never able to feel if she had soft fur; we were never able to have Annie in our laps, never able to give her scritches and kisses but we loved her deeply all the same. She always had a soft bed, lots of high shelves to ‘keep watch’, and kitties to cuddle with in cubbies that were away from our eyes. After moving to the new sanctuary she enjoyed the high shelves on the catios every day, her fearfulness had become less over time.

Annie was rushed to the hospital late this afternoon, and unexpectedly and suddenly we lost our gorgeous girl Annie to renal failure. She was held for the first time in her life, she was cradled in loving arms, she was kissed and given scritches as she passed ever so gently and peacefully.

We will miss you beautiful girl. Rest easy, Annie, you were deeply loved.

Hannah

Hannah

In Memory of Hannah         3/15/2003 – 1/5/2022

Hannah Bananas, that was her nickname given to her by the Shadow Cats staff. She was a very special girl and this is her story.

A beautiful tuxie girl, she was dumped at a shelter in Arlington after living in a home for the first ten years of her life. AFter a routine test for feline leukemia Hannah came up positive. Just imagine, a ten-year-old cat sitting in a high kill shelter with FeLV, very sad and lonely, wondering what had happened. Her chances suddenly became slim to none. This was so sad. A local rescue group worked hard to find a place for her. We were contacted, fell in love with her as soon as we saw her picture, and soon her bags were packed and she was on her way to Shadow Cats.

We routinely test all incoming cats who have tested positive for FeLV. This is normally just a confirmation. But Hannah was not positive! It’s not unheard of to have a false positive, this is why it is so important to absolutely confirm a cat does have feline leukemia.

A new lease on life for Hannah – we were thrilled for her. We thought she would be thrilled to be with us, too! Nope, not that easy for our beautiful girl. She had a hard time adjusting and was very sick when she arrived. She had lived in a peaceful home, and life at the sanctuary was a little overwhelming for her, so Hannah was a grumpy lady at times and that is putting it nicely – she did not want our love and attention or the comfort of the other kitties who wanted to be her buddies. She struggled with some health issues and we did all we could to make her feel at home and comfortable. She was difficult to medicate – it was stressful for her, always a battle, and sometimes she would, you guessed it, go a little “bananas” hence the nickname Hannah Bananas! We always gave Hannah her space knowing that getting too close would result in a gentle swipe and even sometimes a hiss! We accepted her for who she was and loved her all the more for her feisty nature. Maybe she could not shake the memories of her past and being dumped after such a long time in a comfy home. Those memories did not leave her.

Over the last few years, Hannah softened a little. We were patient and we always hope that one day the feisty ones will sit on our lap and return the love we give. Hannah took her time but she came around. To say that we all were just overjoyed was an understatement! We could pet her, she sought out our attention and yes, the biggest reward of all, she would sit on our laps and purr so loudly. She even looked at us and we swear she was smiling a little! We could pick her up and love on her, sometimes with a little grumbling but that was ok! We had earned her trust. How wonderful! We knew then that she loved us too. Hannah, we cannot ever tell you how this made our hearts soar. We never gave up hope that one day things might change and they did!

Since moving to the new sanctuary Hannah has been quite the love bug. She had become so settled; she had one of the best seats in the house, a bed on the kitchen counter, she has watched everything that goes on, she has made friends and become a social girl. She shared lunches with her caregivers, enjoying the occasional french fry! She enjoyed her time on the catio laying in the sun in her favorite spots. We have had long conversations with her about her life, and she has been showered with so much love. We have all tried to make up for the lost years by giving her love and kisses every day.

Hannah has declined lately, and over the past few days we knew something was not right. After a visit to the hospital a tumor in her nasal passage was found and today Hannah Bananas crossed the Rainbow Bridge ever so gently and ever so peacefully cradled in loving arms of her favorite people, our wonderful staff. We always promise our kitties a passing surrounded by love and light, gentle whispers of love, and sweet words to help them on their journey. We knew she was tired. Sadly, it was her time.

Our oldest cat at the sanctuary at present at an incredible 18 years, Hannah had experienced so much in her life – the good and the not so good. This old gal had earned her rest. We celebrate your life and cherish the memories. Hannah, sweet beautiful girl, you will never be forgotten. You will always hold a special place in our hearts. Your presence is not here but you live on in all of us. We will tell stories to the newcomers who come to the sanctuary about a tuxie girl who was feisty but also the biggest softie, who lived her life on her terms, but learned that being loved was the best thing in the world.

Rest easy, Hannah Bananas. Fly high, beautiful girl, on your angel wings. You were loved so very much by so many.

Heartfelt thanks to all who loved Hannah, her sponsors, our volunteers, Sam Bass Wellness Veterinary Wellness, and Shadow Cats’ caring and compassionate staff.

Sebastian

Sebastian

In Memory of Sebastian         5/29/2006 – 12/15/2021

Through our TNR program, Sebastian and his two siblings were trapped many years ago. They all were found to be fairly social and his brother and sister were adopted. Before Sebastian had a chance to find his forever home, he became very ill from a viral infection. Despite intensive treatment, his condition continued to worsen and he spent months in grave condition. Throughout all those months when he lifted his head and looked at you with those great big amber eyes, he seemed to be saying, “Hold on a minute! Wait, don’t give up on me, give me a chance! I am going to get well”, so that is what we did. We did hold on, we did give him a chance. Throughout his many struggles with health issues, Sebastian has been the most loving kitty and such a sweetheart.

During his long stay at our hospital, Sebastian was such a favorite of the staff that he stayed. He knew his way around and was spoiled rotten by everyone. During one of the staff meetings, it was decided that Sebastian should be promoted to one of the official greeters at our Central Texas Cat Hospital. A little shy at first in his new role, Sebastian soon became very comfortable at greeting people and would also greet kitties. He took his ‘job‘ very seriously, hardly missing a day of work as a greeter! We are sure he was passing on to them that the hospital was not a bad place and there was lots of love and care to be had, telling them not to be afraid and scared because he knew from first-hand experience. If you have ever been to Central Texas Cat Hospital, you are sure to have met this handsome boy; he may have snuggled into your lap and purred so loud!

As we all do when we get older, things change, circumstances change, and Sebastian was at that point after many years ‘working’ as the official greeter at the hospital. It was time to retire and come home to Shadow Cats to enjoy some much-deserved R and R. Enjoy it, he did! He enjoyed the catio, always comfy on his favorite deckchair; he enjoyed comfy chairs, squishy blankets, lots of love from everyone, staff and volunteers, all the treats and snacks he wanted, and most of all he enjoyed his bed on the kitchen counter – yes, the kitchen counter – after all this sanctuary belongs to the kitties. He was always next to some of his besties, especially Hannah, in their own beds on the counter, too! Imagine it, a line- up of beds on the counter, so precious! We would always be talking to him when preparing food or meds in the kitchen, and Sebastian, as soon as you said something to him, would gaze at us and start to purr so loudly. We are going to miss you, sweet boy. One thing we may not miss… Sebastian, like many of us, had allergies. We knew to take a step back when he sneezed, as a bit of debris might fly and come our way lol! We would wipe his nose like a kid and being the sweet boy he was, he would let us, unlike many kids do!

Sebastian was diagnosed with renal disease a while ago, and had a sudden downturn over the past few days. Today our sweet boy with the gorgeous amber eyes told us he could not stay, his time had come. Surrounded by those that cared for him every day, cradled in loving arms, Sebastian ever so gently crossed the Rainbow Bridge hearing soft music and sweet whispers. Many tears fell. Pieces of our hearts went with you, Sebastian. We will always remember the gentlest boy. A little goofy at times, you made us laugh and you will live on in our hearts forever. Loved deeply by all who knew him. Almost 16 years old but still not enough time with this sweet boy.

Rest easy, precious Sebastian, fly high with your angel wings and watch over us always.

Thanks to our staff, volunteers, and special thanks to his wonderful sponsors and to his fan base from his years as an official greeter.

Juno

Juno

In Memory of Juno         9/24/2004 – 12/4/2021

We celebrate the wonderful life that our beautiful Juno lived at the sanctuary. The sweetest girl, an amazing 17 years old and feline leukemia positive.

We do not know where Juno originally came from, but we do know that she came to Shadow Cats from a terrible hoarding situation that didn’t end well for many kitties. We all know this story – someone starts out with the very best of intentions but somewhere along the way things get out of hand. Animal Control is called to take the cats out of that situation and then rescue groups and good Samaritans are the saviors that step in to help as many as possible. This little girl was lucky, she was rescued. She was given a medical check-up but during that check-up, she tested positive for leukemia. There were not many options for a kitty with FeLV so many years ago. We were contacted and were full at the time but how could we say no to this beautiful girl who had already been through so much at such a young age?

We fell hopelessly in love with her as soon as she arrived through the door, this big-eyed oh so pretty little girl looking at us from the back of her carrier. Our hearts melted! From that moment, Juno’s life would be forever changed for the better.

Juno has always been a quiet girl, a gentle soul, never one to seek out attention but loved our laps when offered. She was often seen cuddling with the older kitties. She had a calming influence on other kitties especially if she knew they were not feeling well, but she was never a big fan of the young ones! Over the last dozen years, she has seen the comings and goings in Cookies Place, and through it all has sat quietly and observed everything, content to just be. Hopefully we helped to extinguish the horrors of the past. We pampered her, surrounded her with love and she lived the life she deserved every day she was with us. Juno loved to be outside in the catio – she would always find that sunny spot, stretch out and enjoy the warmth of sunbeams. Juno was a serene kitty so it would make us smile to hear such heavy snoring from our sweet girl when she was lying in the sun. 😊 When mealtimes came around Juno was always first in line waiting, that quiet girl found her voice then. And treats, always on alert for the treat jar to be shaken; even from one of those ‘snoring’ deep sleeps, she was there in a flash!

Over the past few months, Juno has become more fragile. She was struggling with chronic renal disease and leukemia-related issues have been taking their toll. Our staff have cared for Juno every day and throughout all her treatments and daily medical care, they will tell you, she has been the best kitty, she has been a trooper, she knew we were helping her feel better. But there comes a point where more treatments, more fluids and medical intervention are no longer a kindness.

Today our sweet girl with the beautiful eyes assured us she was ready, and it was time. She was tired. After having a few treats and being comfy in her favorite bed, Juno passed ever so gently and peacefully surrounded by loving hearts, hearing sweet whispers and soft singing, telling her she was the best kitty ever, loved beyond measure.

Rest easy, precious Juno. You lived your best years at Shadow Cats. Your life was good and you were loved. While our hearts are heavy, we celebrate your long life of 17 years! You leave behind many that loved you dearly. We will miss you, baby girl. The sanctuary will seem a little emptier knowing you are not there. You were one of the ‘old guard’ and we will cherish the special memories of a sweet gentle girl named Juno.

Our thanks to her sponsors, our caring volunteers and our wonderful staff who have so much love and compassion for all our kitties at the sanctuary and to all near and far that loved sweet Juno.
