In Memory of Edith 04/07/2013 – 07/10/2026
Edith had been with her owner since she was a kitten. For nearly 13 years of her life, she’d known the love and care of one family. When it was time to move across the country, they stopped to stay the night at a hotel. Unfortunately, when morning came, they could not find Edith anywhere. Thinking that she had somehow gotten out, they left for the road.
When housekeeping came in a few hours later, they heard meowing and they found that Edith was hiding in the boxspring! She was very scared in this foreign place without the comforts she was used to, and lashed out at the police officer who rescued her, which landed her in mandatory quarantine in the shelter.
The shelter made every effort to reconnect her with her family while she was in quarantine, but her owner could not come back for her and made the painful decision to surrender her. This shelter immediately began working to find Edith a new home, as the threat of euthanasia loomed over her head after her quarantine. Thankfully when they reached out to Shadow Cats, we had the space and were able to take her in quickly.
Edith was very shy and scared at first, in brand new surroundings, it took her awhile to get used to her life at Shadow Cats. She ended up spending some time in our breakroom with our resident office cats, but eventually she made her way back out into Oasis. Her favorite spot quickly became a bed in the kitchen window or on top of the counter. She didn’t get along with any of the cats at first, but after some time she became friends with Dottie and KitKat. She enjoyed sharing a bed with Dottie for nap time, then would greet and boop noses with KitKat while they were waiting side by side for food. Even though she had her friends she made sure other cats knew she preferred to lounge alone, and they all respected her space.
She was extremely sweet with people, especially the men. She was quite the flirt! Her favorite human was Dustin, a board member and volunteer here. She would come running when she heard him arrive, she would follow him everywhere, always desperate for his attention. She wasn’t much of a lap cat but she would often come down from her beds on the counter to saunter over to a man if they sat down long enough. Oh, this girl loved her human men, any man at the Sanctuary, indeed she was quite the flirt
Edith definitely had a voice and would always let you know when she wanted attention or food (she was VERY insistent at mealtimes). She would yell at you until you followed her to what she wanted to show you, whether it be an empty bowl or a spot to hang out for pets.
Unfortunately, in the last few months she started to decline. She kept losing weight with no explanation, despite doing multiple diagnostic tests to try and figure out the answer. She started to get weaker, then one day started having trouble breathing. It was then discovered that she had cancer in her chest, so we made the best decision we could for her and let her pass peacefully. Edith was surrounded by the staff and got to eat plenty of cheese whiz and human treats before the end. We were graced with a beautiful double rainbow immediately after her passing as if it was a note to all who had loved her that she was pain free, and at peace.
