Harrison

In Memory of Harrison              7/16/2004 – 11/1/2022

Over 15 months ago in August 2021, we were contacted about a senior boy, 17 years old, who had been surrendered to a shelter. Lots of reasons were given as to why but one was because he was getting too many colds and was always sneezing. More about that to come!

We fell in love with this beautiful tuxie boy as soon as we saw his picture! We had room in the Oasis part of the sanctuary at the time, so his bags were packed, and Harrison was on his way. As soon as he arrived, we were all under his spell. He was so handsome with his beautiful eyes, he was so playful and did not act like a 17 year old at all. Over the past 15 months that Harrison has been with us, we can honestly say he has been a joy to have around. And to say he has been a character is an understatement!

Harrison may have been a senior but he had so much playfulness in him. He would always be sitting on the kitchen counter, always looking for something to knock on the floor – a jar of treats, a food dish, anything really that took his fancy! One of his favorite activities was making what the staff affectionately called “Harrison Soup.” He would take mouthfuls of kitty kibble and take it to the water bowl and just sprinkle it in. He was always so proud of his creations. On top of all that he was always looking for any extra food that might be handed out. When the staff had lunch Harrison was there on the counter front and center. He was known to almost steal a bite of their sandwich as they were eating. Always so gentle about it though and acted like the perfect gentleman. Always looking at you with the most stunning big eyes. We had some wonderful conversations with him and as he would gaze at us, we felt he was looking into our souls. And he gave the best head bumps whilst purring so loud!

So, about the sneezing, yes, our dear boy did sneeze a lot, and sometimes ’things’ would fly so sandwiches needed to be shielded! He had allergies and we gave him meds every day but it was just part of who he was, we didn’t care, so we would just wipe his nose and clean him up, and he was such a good sport about that too!

Precious Harrison had been losing weight of late. We were monitoring him very closely, but a few days ago it became evident that he was not feeling well. At 18 and a 1/4 years old, time and declining health issues had caught up with our handsome Tuxie boy and he looked at us with those stunning eyes and told us it was his time, he was tired.

Harrison passed ever so gently and peacefully this morning cradled in loving arms surrounded by all those who cared for him every day. Although he did not spend all his life with us, the 15 months that he did spend here were filled with love every day. You made us smile all the time, Harrison, with your antics. We will cherish all the wonderful memories you have left us with. You will be missed beyond measure. Oh how we loved you – you were an absolute sweetheart and a favorite of so many. The kitchen counter will be a little emptier without you being there.

Fly high on your wings, Harrison. You are gone from our lives but will never be gone from our hearts, here you will stay forever. Rest easy, our precious boy. Our thanks to all who loved and cared for Harrison near and far, our staff, volunteers, and his sponsors.

Tom Petty

Tom Petty

In Memory of Tom Petty       11/28/2021 – 10/5/2022

Tom Petty came to us back in July of 2022 after a very rough start in life. He was found as a small kitten dumped in a feral colony on the ASU campus. Unfortunately, it is a pretty common practice for people to abandon cats at known feral colonies and while it may seem a better option than just letting them out to fend for themselves, it is not! When cats are dumped at established colonies they are often attacked as outsiders. They are rarely accepted and often injured by the colony cats. And that is exactly what happened to Tom. He was picked on and attacked by the other cats and injured rather badly. Luckily for Tom, the wonderful people at the ASU Cat Coalition took him in and were able to get him taken care of. In the process though, it was discovered that he was Feline Leukemia positive.

Tom Petty made his way to us and much like with the ASU CC it was love at first sight! There has never been a sweeter or cuter kitten. We always joked that if Tom Petty were a human, he’d be a supermodel. He had the most stunning coat of fur you’d ever seen. And do not even get us started on his eyes; it was like staring into the ocean. A more gorgeous cat has never existed than our Tom Petty.

Typically, all our younger FeLV+ cats go to Cookie’s place. It is livelier in that room and the cats are more rambunctious, to say the least. Tom Petty was always a quieter cat and a bit shyer so we decided to go a different route with him. He moved into Cookie’s Annex with our older and quieter crowd. He was a perfect addition. The most well-behaved roommate! He became buddies with Ozzie and was on occasion seen playing with Scottie. Such a happy crew! Not only was he well-liked by the cats, every human who met him fell in love! There was no denying it, Tom was just a special little guy!

Unfortunately, as can be the way with leukemia, he was not permitted the time with us that we had all hoped for. His little life was far too short. He never quite came out of his shell and got into the crazy antics of most kittens. Then he developed URI symptoms that we could just not chase away. On his most recent vet visit, it was discovered he had developed a mass that was growing quickly. The mass was not treatable and so we did all we could to keep him as happy and comfortable for as long as he had. He let us know it was time and he was able to pass in the arms of the staff that cared for him and loved him so so much, and in the room at the sanctuary that he brought so much light to.

Thank you to all who loved and cared for Tom Petty – our staff, volunteers, his sponsors, and all at Sam Bass Wellness. We want to leave you with some words from Tom’s namesake.

“You and I will meet again, when we’re least expecting it, one day in some far-off place, I will recognize your face, I won’t say goodbye my friend, for you and I will meet again.” -Tom Petty

Pyewacket

Pyewacket

In Memory of Pyewacket       8/27/2006 – 10/5/2022

Over 15 years ago this little grey and white girl showed up at a managed colony here in Round Rock. We will never know how she got to the colony and what her story was before we knew her. She had no ear tip, so the colony’s caretakers knew what had to be done. The traps were set and this petite girl was off to her “spa day”. Sterilized and vaccinated, she was returned to this relatively safe environment to live her life as she wanted to. She was given the name of Pyewacket. We would catch a glimpse of her peeking out behind a bush; she was happy when we were observing her from afar and did not really want the company of humans…or so we thought…

Well, a few years back we were informed that the property was to be sold and the remaining cats had to be relocated. As some of these kitties were getting a little older, Pyewacket was about 10 at this time, we decided to bring them to Shadow Cats as we had cared for them all their lives until this moment.

Pyewacket and a couple of her friends, the only ones left in the colony, became residents of Shadow Cats. After all her tests were done at her intake exam she was found to have toxoplasmosis, so she received treatment and after a brief stay at the hospital joined her colony pals at her new home. At the ‘old’ sanctuary she had lots of hiding places and could watch us and feel a safe distance from us. We would talk to her all the time and tell her how pretty she was. She was so petite; she would look at us with big eyes. We didn’t know quite what she was thinking but we think maybe it was along the lines of “don’t come too close or else”! Even though she was a little bitty girl, we knew she could be a feisty one!

Lo and behold, the passage of time! Our little girl Pyewacket decided that she wanted to get to know us. We were not that scary after all and gradually she would come out of hiding and see us. We were thrilled! Was a lap and cuddles in our future with Pyewacket?

From our observations, she did not have too many close friends. She liked quiet and her own company and she could be a little feisty at times when her space was invaded. Then came the move to the new digs and as the layout is a little different we hoped Pyewacket would be happy in the Oasis part of the house. It’s a bit quieter and she would have loads of space to live the way she wanted.

Well, what do you know? Our pretty little petite girl became the social girl. She loved having soft beds, she had her special place on the sofa, she loved her strawberry bed, she loved being out on the catio, she would come when called, can you believe that? 😊 And of course, she had a nickname – it was PyePye. She was out and about, not hiding at all. And the very best bit of all… she realized that all she wanted was a lap to sit on. Pyewacket, the girl that lived in a field!

She could hardly wait for anyone to sit down before she would be there asking for a lap and pets. She had the cutest little strut and she would get to a lap as fast as she could! Some of us like to think that she did have her favorite people but really we think it was just a lap she wanted! She would purr so loud! This was so heartwarming to all of us.

Sometimes it’s patience, understanding, and so much love and just maybe even the ones who we never think will return our love, do, and it’s a wonderful thing to all of us in the rescue world.

At over 16 years old, PyePye has been declining over the past few months. Diagnosed with advanced renal failure, she has been one of the strongest kitties we have known with this disease. She has not missed the opportunity for a lap, she has been front and center at mealtimes and has kept on going. Over the past few days, we knew that the feistiness in PyePye was ebbing and she was tired. She told us her time was coming. Our petite sweet girl passed gently and ever so peacefully today cradled in her happy place, the lap of one of her caregivers. She was surrounded by love and light as she left this world. She heard sweet gentle whispers of love in her ears. We know the days of living in a field were forgotten and the days of living at the sanctuary in the past 6 years, with all the love and care and laps she ever wanted, are the memories she took with her. Farewell, our lap lover.

Thank you, PyePye, for the beautiful memories we will always have of you. We will always keep you in our hearts and smile as we remember all the times we sat with you in our lap listening to you purr so contentedly.

Rest easy, precious one, you were loved deeply by so many. Our tears flowed today. We have taken care of you all of your life, in and out of the sanctuary, and we will miss you a lot, sweetheart.

Our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful caring staff, our amazing volunteers, her sponsors, all at Sam Bass Wellness, and all who loved Pyewacket from afar.

Mabel

Mabel

In Memory of Mabel       4/4/2012 – 10/3/2022

Mabel was the most stunning floofy girl. This is her story

One day back in 2013,  it was late in the year and the weather was turning cold. It was early, the old sanctuary just beginning to wake up for the day. The techs were doing their rounds and looked up outside to see a cat sitting on the roof. This kitty looked like Annie, a resident of Shadow Cats. Imagine the panic, oh my gosh, had a cat gotten out? Was there an escape hole? Hmm, no – all was secure everywhere and Annie was sleeping. This was just a cat outside that happened to look like our Annie. Our visitor disappeared very quickly and did not want anything to do with us humans.

You know what we were thinking – was this cat a stray or feral cat in the neighborhood? Was she hurt? We spent long hours looking for her along the creek. She did return and was trapped. She acted like a typical feral cat would do when confined and after getting her spayed we had her in a condo to recover.

You never know what the weather will be like in Central Texas but we were having a cold spell so we did not want to return her outside in the cold weather. A few days became a few weeks and Mabel began to show signs of warming up to us humans and even accepting a few pets. How could we put her outside? We couldn’t, so Mabel became a Shadow Cat resident.

Mabel has been with us for almost 10 years. She has not been a cuddly cat or a lap cat but she has enjoyed a good life, her best life. She has been cared for every day and safe and we have loved her very much. She has always enjoyed outdoor space. She loved to cozy up with her kitty friends and they could often be found in one of the Wild Side cubbies all cuddled up together. For the last few years, her bestie has been Mia. They have been true kitty friends. And both fully fledged members of the chicken gang, always waiting when chicken was offered albeit from a distance and usually in a cubbie! Both night girls too, out and about, checking things out when it was quiet, and when our night tech would come in with treats Mabel was not shy then. 😊

Being a kitty that is hard to handle does not mean that they get any less care than any other kitty at the sanctuary. They receive regular checkups at the vet and our staff observes them closely even though they do not want to be ’friends’ with us sometimes. Mabel’s caregivers had observed some changes in her and a veterinary checkup was scheduled. On examination, Mabel was found to have an inoperable mass behind her eye. On advice from our veterinarian, the heartbreaking decision was made to let Mabel pass gently. She was held maybe for the first time in her life, and sadly, the last time, as she gently and ever so peacefully crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Who knows what her life would have been if Mabel had not rested on the sanctuary roof that day? We are so thankful she lived her life safe and cared for and loved every day with wonderful kitty buddies. She was who she wanted to be and we couldn’t have loved her more.

Rest easy, our gorgeous floofy girl, we loved you from the first time we saw you on the roof!

Thanks to all who loved and cared for Mabel – our staff, volunteers, her sponsors, and all at Sam Bass Wellness.

Sushi

Sushi

In Memory of Sushi       4/15/2004 – 8/15/2022

Just over a year ago we were contacted and asked to take a couple of 17 year old senior boys. They were in a rough situation that was deteriorating quickly – one of their guardians had passed away and the other  could no longer care for these boys. A wonderful good Samaritan rescuer stepped in to try and find the brothers a place to live in peace and safety. Our focus is feline leukemia kitties but sometimes we are able to help as we have space. We found space for these two very senior cats.

We were looking forward to meeting them, looking forward to giving them lots of love and the best care possible. Well, you know how it goes, as soon as they arrived our hearts were stolen. Out of the carriers came two of the most gorgeous black cats, Koutzey and Sushi.

Sushi was the most distinguished looking gentleman, so handsome, with the most stunning eyes. Eyes that seemed to look deep into our souls. What made him even more cute and lovable was his significant ear deformities, which was due to parasites. He was so handsome! Sushi was at home from the start, he just took one look around, jumped up onto the kitchen counter, and gave us that look as if to say “Yep, this is ok, me and my brother are going to be fine”.

It’s always a concern to us, whether cats will fit it, especially if used to an indoor/outdoor life, and we always want them to live their best life, so two 17 year olds was definitely a cause for some anxious moments. We need not have worried with these boys. They fit right in and were happy to be inside from day one. They always had the big catio to go outside but they both preferred being indoors.

Over the past year, Sushi has truly lived his best life. Not sure about all that happened in his past, but in the last year here his days have been filled with an abundance of love and care. He has spent his days however he wanted, most of the time in one of the beds on the kitchen counter. We think he was very clever with that move because any time there were snacks or extra treats around he would be first in line! Smart boy! Sushi was so lovable and he had the sweetest gentlest personality. He loved laps and would gaze up at us with those beautiful eyes and many times with a tongue just peeping out too. 😊 He was a talkative one and had a lot to say; he has seen a lot in his 18 years now and wanted to let us know! He would steal our hearts all over again with his sweet ways.

Sushi’s health has declined over the past weeks, and today he suffered a dramatic downturn. Everything that could be done was done, and on advice from our veterinarian, the always most heart wrenching decision had to be made. Sushi was held close as he ever so gently crossed the Rainbow Bridge, cradled in the arms of those that loved and cared for him, he heard gentle whispers of love as we sent him on his journey.

You were loved to the moon and back, sweet Sushi. We are going to miss you, handsome boy. We will miss you on the kitchen counter, we will miss those beautiful eyes gazing at us, and we will miss your distinguished looks. You are gone from this world but you will live on in our hearts, always. We know you will be telling lots of stories to all those waiting gone before you. Rest easy, precious Sushi…

Our thanks always to our loving, caring staff, our devoted volunteers, and the veterinary care Sushi received at Sam Bass Wellness. Thank you for the love and support from his sponsors and his good Samaritan rescuer.

Hope

Hope

In Memory of Hope       1/9/2010 – 8/4/2022

Our precious girl has only been with us a few months. We knew when she came to us in January she was not doing well. This pretty girl was found wandering the streets in Hays County, a plan was made and she was trapped. She was given care and at a veterinary checkup she was found to be microchipped, but sadly her guardian had passed away. She was also found to be FeLV+. At almost 12 years old and not in good health, there was not much ‘Hope’ of a good outcome for this pretty girl. We were contacted by a good Samaritan and with the help of one of our board members, we welcomed Hope to the sanctuary. We don’t know why she ended up on the streets, but we did know that this senior gal deserved to be given the best life she could have.

She was named Hope by the good Samaritan who helped get her to safety, and it just fit her – she was full of hope and so were we that she would be able to feel better and enjoy some of the good life we would give her. She was delicate and struggling with health issues all related to leukemia.

Hope was the sweetest, most loving kitty, a little shy at first, but she soon settled into life in Cookies Annex. This area is for some of the older FeLV kitties or ones that like it a little quieter than being with some of the young’uns in the main Cookie’s room that are always on the go! Hopie (you know we always have nicknames) would always come to say hello when you walked in the room, even if asleep she gets up and would come and give us head bumps, as though she was just checking in and giving us updates on her day. We felt that Hopie was that sort of kitty that wanted to make us humans feel good, she wanted to give love to us. We are sure all our friends understand this about certain kitties. We loved her to bits. As soon as she arrived our hearts were stolen by this girl.

Hope lived her last few months to the fullest. She was home. She had a big comfy bed to sleep in, she had kitty friends, she had a huge catio, she could wander in and out and relax in sunbeams when she wanted, and she could watch all the happenings in the garden outside. She had a great appetite and we knew she could tell time because she would be waiting even before we had prepared meals or a can had been opened. 😊

Some of our leukemia kitties are with us for many years, some are with us for a much shorter time. Our precious Hope was with us for about 7 months. We loved her very much, and she has had the best care. We have snuggled with her, played with her, showered her with love, and been privileged to be part of her life. We are so glad she was with us; we gave her the best of us and she gave us the best of her in return.

But, after doing everything we could to make her feel better, the effects of leukemia had taken their toll and sadly Hope told us she was tired and could no longer fight; it was her time. Hope crossed the Rainbow Bridge ever so gently and peacefully surrounded by love and light cradled in loving arms listening to sweet whispers telling her how much she was loved. We hoped that all the memories she had of life on the streets were gone and she knew of nothing but love when she left us.

We will miss you, sweet Hopie, gone but never forgotten. You will always be in our hearts. Rest easy, pretty girl.

Our thanks to our caring, dedicated staff, our volunteers, her sponsors, and to all at Sam Bass Veterinary Wellness.

Molly

Molly

In Memory of Molly       8/2/2016 – 7/18/2022

Molly has always been a bit of an enigma to us. She came to us from AAC back in 2017, at one year old, but not much was known about her history. Once here she tended to keep to herself but never shied away from attention if offered. Molly’s favorite places to be were either outside in the sun or on someone’s shoulder. She quickly earned many nicknames such as squirrel due to her climbing hijinks. Doing morning rounds with Molly on your shoulder was a common and much loved occurrence for the staff.

This girl will always be one of the most interestingly beautiful cats to have graced the catios of Shadow Cats – part tabby, part calico, and with the biggest most stunning eyes you have ever seen. Just one look from her and you would fall in love. She was always petite, one of the smaller cats in Cookie’s Place, but that did not hold her back. She strutted through the rooms with aloof confidence.

When morning feeding time came around Molly was always first in line. Her favorite waiting spot was on top of a tall thin scratching post. She looked like a statue, or a lookout atop a crow’s nest on a boat. It was like she was there to give everyone the alarm “food is coming!”

Molly has and will always be a favorite of the staff here at Shadow Cats. Now we try not to have favorites but just one cuddle from Molly and you would understand why she is the exception. As she curled into your arms you could feel her purr reverberate and just see the love and warmth in her face. Molly snuggles were truly special.

About a month ago Molly was diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. We were hopeful it was just exacerbated by an infection and the leukemia and that she would bounce back quickly. Unfortunately, it was all too much for her little body. Over the last few days, Molly has let us know that it was her time and she is ready to move on. She passed away peacefully in the arms of those who cared for her and loved her deeply. Molly’s life may not have been long but we know for sure it was a life filled with love.

Our thanks always to our loving, caring staff, our devoted volunteers, and the veterinary care Molly received at Sam Bass Wellness. Thank you for the love and support from her sponsors.

Harry Pawter

Harry Pawter

In Memory of Harry Pawter       5/4/2019 – 7/1/2022

A very handsome boy came to us from Kerrville, Texas. He was living with a foster mom until he could find his forever home. As we know, sometimes it’s not that easy for kitties with leukemia, but luck was on this kitty’s side. We had space and he arrived at Shadow Cats, his new home.

This boy was so handsome and his markings were so striking! Of course we could see why, with that amazing lightning bolt of white fur on his forehead, he deserved a name reflecting the title of the famous books, so Harry Pawter he was named! Because he was so special, some kitties just have to be called by their full name, and that was Harry P – we always called him Harry Pawter.

A more lovable friendly kitty you could not meet. Harry Pawter became one of the gang in Cookie’s Place in no time. He had many buddies right from the start, and it seemed as though they would all gather round as he was telling stories about his life before Shadow Cats, how he had been rescued, and how lucky he was to be part of the FeLV club in Cookie’s Place.

Harry Pawter, although he was the friendliest boy, was a quiet kitty. He did like laps and the occasional cuddles but did not seek them out as some do. We were so happy when he would love on us but mostly he wanted to be where there were things he could watch. He could always be found outside on the catios, on a high shelf, soaking up the sun and watching all the action at the bird feeders and the antics of the squirrels. He loved to eat and he was another member of the chicken gang of Shadow Cats – when boiled chicken was offered, Harry Pawter was right there front and center. Naps, yes, naps were a big favorite of his, especially in a sunbeam!

Over the past couple of weeks, the effects of leukemia had reared their ugly head and our handsome boy with the lightning bolt was declining. Harry Pawter received the best care from all at the sanctuary and from our amazing veterinary support. A little while ago Harry Pawter had breathing difficulties and the always difficult decision had to be made, our final gift to our precious cats, a peaceful passing, cradled in loving caring arms, gentle whispers of love in their ears.

Harry Pawter, you dashing handsome boy, we will miss you. We wished you had lived many more years enjoying the catios, where you loved to be, but we are so grateful you were with us and we had you in our lives. We just hoped it would be longer. Harry Pawter was just over 3 years old.

Rest easy, precious Harry Pawter. You were one awesome kitty.

Our thanks always to our loving, caring staff, our volunteers, and the veterinary care he received at Sam Bass Wellness. Thank you for the love and support from his sponsors.

Elliott

Elliott

In Memory of Elliott       4/5/2003 – 6/21/2022

Elliott had the saddest of starts in life. We know that his long life at the sanctuary has made up for what could have been an even sadder story, one we may not have had the chance to tell.

Imagine … his mom was a stray cat, living in the most desperate conditions. She gave birth to a litter of kittens in a woodpile and was unable to care for them. One by one they succumbed until only a single kitten was left alive. With not a moment to spare this little bitty tabby kitten was found and luckily came to Shadow Cats. He was so tiny he fit in the palm of your hand, but he was in need of care and quickly! He was named Elliott. This little one received round-the-clock care and blossomed into a wonderful sweet kitten. He had the sweetest face and all who met him fell under his spell, he was so adorable! Adoptable, yes, and he was adopted, but our sweet kitten when in a home had many issues with his litter box habits. We can call it “litter box challenged” 😊

That’s a tough thing to handle in a home, we understand! We always stand by “Once a Shadow Cat always a Shadow Cat “ so Elliott was on his way back to the sanctuary. Goodness knows we are used to spills and accidents at the sanctuary, and litter box challenges we can cope with! We always hope that we can improve on bad habits but if not to be, that’s ok too! Over the years there have been some puddles in some unlikely places and we always knew the culprit! It was that rascal Elliott!

We say often that the sanctuary will not seem the same when one of our precious kitties passes but never more true than with Elliott gone. Our dear boy was in his 20th year and has been with us his whole life!

Elliott has lived large at Shadow Cats. In his almost 20 years he has seen so much, all the comings and goings at the old sanctuary plus he moved to the new sanctuary at a ripe old age of 17 and never missed a beat. He was one of the old guard. His personality was a mixture of laid back calmness, pet me please, to, don’t bother me I’m asleep, always in the most comfy bed! He had the knack of finding the most squishy bed. He would share with other kitties, but Elliott was a little on the large side so sometimes not much room for cuddle mates, although they made it work usually with one kitty (not Elliott) hanging off the side of the bed. In his younger years he was not much for laps but as he became older he loved to sit on laps and loved the attention. One thing – yes, Elliott was a big kitty, always first up for mealtimes, and even to his last days he was always on the lookout for food to arrive. He always made us smile, waiting at the door at the top of the ramp with that cheeky look on his face.

Not quite sure we can put into words how big a void you will leave, Elliott. You have just always been with us. 20 years is a long time, and we just knew you were there watching over us, and being the best grandad to all the newbies who crossed your path. Recently, you were the best grandad to Darby – you seemed to know she had had a rough start in life like you, and over the past few months the cuddles you two have had have made us all teary. You were the odd couple!

Today we said goodbye to our beloved Elliott. We knew it was his time. Cradled in loving arms, sweet whispers of love in his ears, Elliott peacefully and ever so gently fell asleep. Our hearts are heavy, and tears have flowed freely. The sadness we feel is overwhelming knowing our Elliott, our sweet Grandad kitty, will not be at the sanctuary tomorrow. Through the tears, we celebrate a life well lived, a kitty that had a terrible start in life but despite that, lived his best life, deeply loved and cared for every single day he spent on this earth. The cherished memories you left with us we will hold close in our hearts forever.

We will miss you, gentle Elliott. Rest easy, sweetness, loved beyond measure. You live on in our hearts.

Our thanks to our amazing caring staff and volunteers for loving Elliott deeply. Thank you to his sponsors who loved him equally deeply from afar.

Nascar

Nascar

In Memory of Nascar       3/1/2016 – 6/18/2022

Nascar lived up to his name!

This little bitty tuxedo kitten was trapped in Arlington TX, ands taken to the shelter for TNR. The R part of TNR (return) was never going to happen – this tuxie lad was as sweet and lovable as can be, so he went into foster care to await adoption. Routine testing indicated he was positive for leukemia. Our good friends in Arlington contacted us and Nascar was on his way to Shadow Cats. He did not know it, but he was going to have his best life, however long or short.

When Nascar arrived, we swear, he was a blur right out of the carrier! He only knew one speed at that was top speed! An energetic, playful kitten, full of life, lovable, and sweet. Nassie, our nickname for him, was the cutest kitten. He had some rather big ears when he was little and we would tell him he had to grow into those ears. And did he ever! As he grew older he became the most stunningly handsome grown up boy. He had the most gorgeous eyes – there always seemed to be a twinkle in them. When we talked to him we felt as though he was really listening to us, but in reality we think he may have been planning his next mischief making! He was the most mischievous lovable boy, always on the top shelves on the catio looking down at us and zooming around after toys. Jumping on our shoulders was a favorite trick, too! He made us laugh and smile with his constant antics! He was also quite popular amongst his roommates – he always had a playmate and a cuddle buddy! He gave the best cuddles to us humans, too! A member of the chicken gang as well, whenever a volunteer brought boiled chicken, he was front and center, sometimes waiting not so patiently. That was Nascar, always on the go!

The effects of leukemia began to take their toll a little while back. A few months ago we thought we were going to lose him but he defied all the odds and told us in no uncertain terms, I’m not ready yet! He has enjoyed his time on the catio in the sun and the company of all his best buddies in the past months. We have cherished the extra time.

Over the last few days Nascar began to tell us he was tired. The fight had left him and he could not stay this time. Today we gave him the most precious gift we can give, a gentle peaceful passing. He was held in loving arms, he heard sweet whispers telling him he was loved beyond measure and soft singing as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Nassie, you lived your life to the fullest. It wasn’t as long as we hoped for, but every day, you played hard, you went full steam ahead from the day you arrived. You were loved and cherished every single day and every single day was the best it could be. Your life and you mattered. Our hearts are heavy. We will miss you terribly, our handsome tuxie boy, but we know you truly lived your best life at the sanctuary. When we think of you it will always be with a smile. Nascar, you made us smile every day, thank you, sweet one.

We had 6 wonderful years. Too short a time, but filled to the brim with love for our handsome tuxie boy! Cookie’s Place will be a little quieter without you.

Rest easy, precious Nascar. Fly high on your wings. Romp and play and cause mischief across the Bridge!

Our thanks to our loving, caring staff who looked after Nascar every single day. Thanks to his sponsors, our volunteers, and all who knew precious Nascar far and wide.
